What is the Geodatabase?

The ArcGIS geodatabase is a collection of geographic datasets of various types. Geodatabases reside either in the file system or within a number of relational databases. The geodatabase is the native data source for ArcGIS and is used for editing and ArcGIS data management.

Geodatabases support much more than feature classes, images, and attributes. They are instrumental in implementing critical spatial relationships, advanced GIS integrity rules, and behavior using comprehensive data types such as topologies, networks, image catalogs, address locators, terrains, cadastral fabrics, relationships, and domains.
