Important - Make sure you install Business Analyst by running the
setup from Business Analyst 9.3.1 DVD #1

Hours: 6:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
(Pacific time), Monday–Friday
System requirements
The minimum
system requirements for ArcGIS Business Analyst 9.3.1
are the same as those for ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1,
except for the following:
• At least 1 GB RAM is needed to adequately
run many of the functions, although 2 GB is recommended.
• It is highly recommended that you
load all the Business Analyst data components to your local hard drive, which
will require approximately 9 GB of disk space. It is possible to run Business
Analyst while accessing the data from the DVD or from another drive on your
network, but the performance will be significantly slower. Also, regardless of
where the Business Analyst data components exist, you will need approximately
350 MB of additional space in the ArcGIS Desktop
installation location (e.g., C:\Program Files\ArcGIS).
This is required to install the necessary Business Analyst program and data
files.
• Although it is not a requirement
for installing and working with Business Analyst, please note that you must
have Microsoft Excel® 2000 or higher if you wish to work with Excel
tables in ArcGIS 9.3.1.

Installation Options
During the ArcGIS Business Analyst 9.3.1 setup, you will be presented
with two installation options:
• Typical Data Install
• Custom Install
Typical Data Install—This is the default installation, which will
automatically load all Business Analyst data components to your local hard
drive in the ArcGIS Desktop installation location
(e.g., C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Business Analyst).
This will require approximately 16 GB of disk space.
Custom
Install—The
Custom option is recommended for users with limited disk space on the local
hard drive where ArcGIS Desktop is located or for
those who do not need to install all the data components. This option allows
you to select which data components you wish to install and where you want to
install them. The following is a list of Business Analyst data components and
their approximate sizes:
• ESRI Data 1.9 GB
• InfoUSA
Business Data 594 MB
• DMM Shopping Centers Data 1.0 MB
• Geocoding
Data 7.9 GB
• Tele Atlas Street Data 4.0 GB
Here are
common examples for using the Custom option:
• If you want to install all data
components to a location other than the default location, select the main Business
Analyst data component and click Browse to specify the new location.
• If you want to install some data
components but not all of them, turn off each of the individual data components
that you do not want to install by clicking the arrow next to the component and
selecting Entire feature will be unavailable. You can also choose separate
installation locations for each data component by selecting a component and
clicking Browse to specify the location.
Note for
If you have access to the Internet, you can check for updates to
Business Analyst by selecting this item in the Business Analyst program menu.
From the Start menu, go to ArcGIS > Business
Analyst > Check for Business Analyst Updates. When the dialog box appears,
click the Check button to see if there are any available updates. If updates
are available, you can choose to download them and also run the updates after
they are downloaded. For more information, click the Help button on the dialog
box. Please note that to check for Business Analyst updates, ArcMap™ and ArcCatalog™
must be closed. If you are unable to run the automatic update utility in
Business Analyst due to local security protocols, you can download the latest
service patch from the support site at http://support.esri.com and run the
patch locally.
Data Update Install
(You have the Business Analyst 9.2 or 9.3
installed prior to installing Business Analyst 9.3.1)
• Analysis Backup: To preserve any data or analyses
generated using the data in the previous version of Business Analyst, the
installation utility will automatically rename the output folder, by default
named My Output Data, to My Output Data_ backup. If you have renamed this
folder in the Business Analyst preferences, the install utility will simply add
backup to the end of this folder. For a comprehensive look at the list
of data, files, and vintages, please consult the documentation folder that will
be available when Business Analyst has been completely installed in the default
directory C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Business
Analyst\Documentation. If you wish to access analyses from a previous build,
you can simply copy the contents of C:\My Output Data_backup\Projects
into the new C:\My Output Data\Projects folder that is created during the
install. We suggest you then rename your projects to reflect that they are from
a previous update. For example, if you have a project called North Eastern
District, you should rename it North Eastern District backup.
• Custom Reports: Reports created in previous
builds of Business Analyst can be imported into the new software update. After
Business Analyst has completed installation, navigate to the directory C:\My
Output Data_backup\Report Templates and copy the folders
containing your custom reports into the directory C:\My Output Data\Report Templates_USA_ESRI. Now you will have access to your
reports in the update.
