Geologic Mapping Template

The Geologic Mapping Template is a collection of ArcGIS resources designed to facilitate geologic mapping. This is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and ESRI to implement the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization (FGDC Document Number FGDC-STD-013-2006) in ArcGIS.

In order to most effectively portray complex geologic information, symbols and labels have been developed using cartographic representations and the Maplex label extension in ArcGIS 9.3. This Template includes 1000 of the most commonly used line and point symbols in Sections 1-18 of the Standard.

Plans for updating the Template include:

  1. Revisions to symbols as needed, based on a thorough USGS review of the Geologic Mapping Template, and on user comments;

  2. Adding about 100 FGDC symbols (from Sections 19 and 26) that were not included in the May, 2009, release of the Geologic Mapping Template; and

  3. Adding FGDC patterns intended for use in stratigraphic columns and correlation charts.

To learn how to use the Geologic Mapping Template symbology with your database schema, visit the Mapping Center and read the How to use Geologic Mapping Template symbology with your database schema. For further information or to provide comment on the GMT, please contact us through the Ask a Cartographer link on the Mapping Center website. To provide comments about the FGDC standard itself, please contact the USGS.

Legend issues   posted by geoscience6 on Jun 11, 2009 10:17 AM

Symbols work and look great. Only issue is you cannot use symbols to make a legend in ArcMap. Any faults with markers just show up as lines only when you make a legend (add the normal fault symbol to a legend...it is just a straight line). Any way around this? Otherwise, works great for digital only maps...but still must make a custom legend if you want to make a print-ready map in Arc.

If you want to plot the representation symbols in the legend, one option is to customize the feature classes that use control points as part of the Rule definition. To do this make copies of the fault and fold feature classes. Name them legend_fault and legend_fold. You can then change the control point marker placement settings for legend_fault and legend_fold from "On Vertices" to "On line," Position:0, Relative to: Line middle, Angle to line: check. After you apply the new settings, you should be able to create a new legend that displays the completed symbol.

REPRESENTATION menue   posted by LuisAlejandro on Aug 19, 2009 2:55 PM

How it is posible to run the REPRESENTATION tool?: http://www.pic2up.net/view/QfRKGdp-sig.JPG Because I can not find the way to built my own geodatabase with this tool. Is this option available for ARCGIS 9.3 users?

Please refer to the "How to use Geologic Mapping Template symbology with your database schema" Mapping Center blog. The link is provided in the template description above.

ARRRG-Getting Started with the Geologic Mapping Template   posted by teriarati on Nov 24, 2009 6:15 PM

1- Is there a simpler way to use the symbols I need without going through all of the steps outlined in this document? 2-I am using ArcMap 9.3. Using the above manual and after i installed the template, I cannot get through step 2. I get a "failed to Apply Coordinate System" error. My data is NAD83 RI state plane (feet) and the geologic transformation I am trying to use is NAD_1983_To_WGS_1984_5 (one of 8 choices I am given-and have tried them all!) A geodatabase seems to have been created, but I am unable to migrate my data to it (step 3). 3- Okay then I tried to follow the instructions "How to use GMT template symbology with your database schema" but wasn't able access the save rule function. (I posted this issue yesterday)I suppose it is because I was not able to set up the geodatabase in the first place. Maybe I am reading the instructions wrong-I feel like I'm missing something-something I should just automatically know-however there resource for troubleshooting and have not found any similar posts.

Looking into this. I, too, am getting an error message.

New projection tool to be posted soon   posted by ESRI_Cartography_Team on Dec 01, 2009 4:43 PM

For those of you that use a Transverse Mercator projection, a new tool will be posted soon. The (2) Apply Coordinate System to ESRI_Geology.gdb tool produces an error message if you select a Transverse Mercator projection. This includes several of the State Plane projections. Thanks in advance for your patience!

Updated Projection Model/Tool   posted by ESRI_Cartography_Team on Dec 07, 2009 12:00 PM

The (2) Apply Coordinate System to ESRI_Geology.gdb tool has been modified. The original tool produced an extent error for Transverse Mercator - based projections. The new tool should remedy this error.

Representations to Symbols   posted by natahoyos on Jan 07, 2010 12:48 PM

Is it possible to export representations as symbols? it seems like for maps that are not very complex, symbols are simpler to use than representations, any suggestions?

Corrupt Zip   posted by kris392001 on Jan 07, 2010 5:31 PM

I've downloaded the file twice and the zip file seems to be corrupt. Could someone check this please?

Can you please describe the issue in more detail? Thanks!

Representations to symbols   posted by teriarati on Feb 05, 2010 11:24 AM

I would also like to know if there is a way to export representations to symbols. I have been unable to successfully complete the steps outlined in the supporting material. I need 3 symbols and if I cannot get them to work using ArcMap I will have to use another program to finish my map.

Re: Representations to symbols   posted by ESRI_Cartography_Team on Feb 09, 2010 1:40 PM

ArcEditor and ArcInfo license level are required to implement the work flow described in the "How to use Geologic Mapping Template symbology with your database schema" blog on mapping center. Representations do not export to the standard symbol style. Hope that helps.
