Water Distribution Network Editing
|
The Water Distribution Network Editing Template is an industry-specific configuration of ArcGIS Desktop used to update water distribution geodatabases. It provides relevant basemaps, an updated water utility data model, and a series of ArcGIS Desktop editing tools so water distribution improvements can be added to the geodatabase efficiently.

Mass calculating edits MUCH slower posted by johnstruk on Feb 25, 2009 11:31 AM
Hi folks, After installing the template, we noticed a significant performance decrease when doing mass calculations of features NOT related to the Water Distribution Network model within our SDE feature classes... (ex. calculating zip code into a field inside of 29 address points took 25 seconds) After uninstalling the app, mass calculations were instantaneous. Love the template though. Edit Extension Slowing down batch processing posted by mmiller@esri.com on Feb 26, 2009 12:13 PM
John, Thanks for your comment. We are aware of the issue and we are looking into it. When batch processing the Dynamic Values extension is running if you are editing. The work around for now is to turn the extension off. You can do this in the Editor - Options dialog. We will get an update posted as soon as we can. Thanks
Water Model template installation error posted by scallawah_123 on Mar 02, 2009 1:42 PM
I am trying to install the template and get an error that states 'error 1001. Unable to get installer types in the C:\..... assembly. ------> Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the loaderExceptions property for more information'. I have arcgis 9.3 with the java development environment installed. Do I need to install with the .net sdk?
Install Error posted by mmiller@esri.com on Mar 03, 2009 5:17 AM
scallawah_123, This toolbar is built using .Net and the .Net support for ArcGIS. I bet this is causing the error. I added a blog entry on how to install the .Net support for ArcGIS. Let us know if this does not fix the issue. http://blogs.esri.com/Dev/blogs/waterutilities/default.aspx Thanks ArcGIS Team Water
Can I change a layer name? posted by jsn on Mar 23, 2009 6:15 AM
Instead of using wmeter for the meter layer can I rename it servicepoints ? Where do I have to change this value? Is there a configuration file? Thanks
Config File posted by mmiller@esri.com on Mar 23, 2009 9:45 AM
We are currently working on a blog to detail the config file, in the meantime, browse to C:\Program Files\ArcGIS Templates\Water Utilities\Network Editing\bin\EditTools.config you can change layers names in this file in the current release

Thanks for this great template. However, is there any way we could a copy of the Stylesheet source code referrenced in the config.xml? Thanks! --David
Does it work with SDE layers posted by jsn on Mar 27, 2009 11:15 AM
Does it work with SDE layers? It tested this toolbar with personal geodatabase layers and it worked fine, but with the same layers in SDE it showed an error message. Anyone using it with SDE?
SDE Layers posted by ESRITeamWater on Mar 30, 2009 12:43 AM
Yes, we have tested the toolbar with SDE and it works. Can you please send a screen shot of the error to ArcGISTeamWater@esri.com.
Underground Water Pipe Network Hydraulic Analysis posted by Jason5327 on Apr 20, 2009 11:28 AM
I would like to know how GIS can be used in the hydraulic analysis of an underground water pipe system. This is for a potential project with the objective being to locate where in a pipe network there are problems with pressure, energy losses, and water flow. Questions to be answered: 1) In what areas is water velocity slow and/or backing up? 2) Why is water backup in areas? 3) Are there areas where water isn't flowing? 4) Where does there need to be more storage, booster pumps or loops to help increase the flow of water throughout the network? We will be using the Water Distribution Network Editing Toolbar to design and draw the network in ArcMap. What we need now is the tool that can run the hydraulic analysis in a model-like fashion, showing us the areas of concern for repairs or changes.
Hydraulic Modeling & GIS posted by hcrothers on Apr 28, 2009 8:14 AM
To perform the type of specialized hydraulic analysis you describe, we suggest you use a hydraulic modeling solution from one of our ESRI business partners. See the Water Utility Blog for more information on hydraulic modeling and GIS. If you would like to discuss this further please email us at ArcGISTeamWater@esri.com
Database Schema Change posted by CelesteDy on May 10, 2009 8:35 PM
Hi! The Network Editing Template is indeed very useful. However, can we edit the underlying database schema, e.g change domain and subtype values, rename feature classes, delete some feature classes and just add subtypes instead? If yes, up to what extent can we change the schema? Will it affect the template if we remove the feature datasets, which do not contain any geometric network and have standalone feature classes instead? I'm just worried about the performace in case we deploy the template to several editors. In addition, we have to follow some standard naming conventions, which are different from the template. But the template is indeed cool and very useful! Thanks!
Changing the schema posted by mmiller@esri.com on May 11, 2009 5:47 AM
The tools are configured for the templates data schema. There are certain fields/feature classes that a required to use the template as is. If you want to use the template on a different data set, you will need to modify the configuration files and the dynamic values table in the geodatabase. The config file for the network editing extension is located in the install directory.\ArcGIS Templates\Water Utilities\Network Editing\bin\EditTools.config.
Can't create system valve with specific length posted by jmckay2521 on Jun 16, 2009 8:35 AM
I am not able to create my system valves based off a specific length when using the toolbar. I am missing the create point feature in the task drop down menu.
Creating a Valve posted by mmiller@esri.com on Jun 17, 2009 6:59 AM
@jmckay2521, Is your valve layer named the same as one in the map doc and the sample MXD? If they are different, you probably need to adjust the config. Can you send a screen shot and your map doc to ArcGISTeamWater@esri.com? The create point feature task is not required.
Last Update Date & Last Editor fields posted by palwardWL on Jul 20, 2009 1:49 PM
Hi. We saw these templates at the UC and we really like them. They contain a lot of features we want to use. I am playing around with the template before adding our own data to it. I am having trouble populating the "Last Update Date" & "Last Editor" fields in some of the sample feature classes like "wPressureZone" and others. This works well for feature classes like "wMain" & "wHydrant". Is there something I need to edit like a config file to enable the automatic population of those fields?
Response: Last Update Date & Last Editor fields posted by mmiller@esri.com on Jul 22, 2009 6:20 AM
@palwardWL, I was able to reproduce the issue. We are currently working on an update, I will add this to the list of changes. If you send your email address to ArcGISTeamWater@esri.com, I can send an updated dll as soon as we make the fix. Thanks
Create point features posted by pmcrumley on Jul 24, 2009 7:00 AM
Is the create point features task tool avaiable. In the viedo it works well but we dont have it.
Answer: Create point features posted by mmiller@esri.com on Jul 27, 2009 7:20 AM
@pmcrumley, We are going to include that task in the next release of the template. In the mean time, you can use the sample here. http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisdesktop/com/samples/Editing/Edit_Tasks/CreatePointWithSketch/60874252-921c-4a26-8444-ddccb715fc36.htm

I am trying to follow along with the video and test this template. I cannot get the place system valve to "snap" to the intersection and then i cannot figure out how to place it along the pipe 10 ft. cant find anything in help either.
Create Point At End of Line - Edit Task posted by mlundeen on Aug 20, 2009 3:14 PM
As mentioned in an previous comment, in order to access the functionality shown in the video to add a valve at a distance along a pipe, you'll need to install developer sample available from this link: http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisdesktop/com/samples/Editing/Edit_Tasks/CreatePointWithSketch/60874252-921c-4a26-8444-ddccb715fc36.htm Using this task, Ctrl+L on your keyboard will allow you to constrain the length of the line. The snapping is based on your snapping environment under the Editor> Snapping... dialog. The next update of these Edit Tools will have this functionality included automatically along with the toolbar and dynamic value extension.
Geometric Network? posted by lindseyvest on Oct 29, 2009 11:41 AM
Is a geometrick network required to use this toolbar?
Answer: Geometric Network posted by mmiller@esri.com on Oct 30, 2009 8:20 AM
@lindseyvest, the current release does require the geometric network for some of the tools and the attribute assistant extension. We are working on an update that has removed the need for the Geometric network on the attribute assistant. If you would like a beta copy, please send a email to ArcGISTeamWater@esri.com
Config File Details. posted by ibailey on Nov 18, 2009 10:53 AM
Are you still working on the blog post with information about the config file that was mentioned in the post by mmiller@esri.com on Mar 23, 2009. I having trouble getting the dynamic values to work correctly and I think it's because my schema doesn't match the template and I have something wrong in the EditTools.config file.
